An Exploratory Study on Charitable Bequest Intention in Korea

Abstract
This study attempts to identify determinants of citizen¡¯s charitable bequest intention in Korea. It analyzes the effects of citizens¡¯ socio-psychological factors, charitable effort factors (present giving & volunteering) and demographic variables on their bequest intention by using the 2008 National Survey Data on Koreans¡¯ Giving and Volunteering and Tobit regression analysis method. On 1,016 respondents, this study conducts descriptive analysis on the variables used for the study model and inferential analysis to identify statistically significant variables influencing citizens¡¯ charitable bequest intention. Findings show that philanthropic socialization throughout parents at home and school during their developmental period(+), openness in giving(+), organization reputation(+), current amount of charitable giving(+), education(+), religion-Christianity(+) have statistically significant effects on the degree of charitable bequest intention. Based on the results about citizens¡¯ charitable bequest intention, this study discusses strategic directions for developing and nurturing citizens¡¯ bequest donation. It also provides new direction for researchers on citizens¡¯ bequest donation. Finally, it emphasizes that continuous research on citizens¡¯ bequest donation is vital for developing and strengthening nonprofit social welfare sector as well as buildFing new philanthropic culture in Korea.
